Lair of The leopard by Bear Grylls has been reviewed by Ben M

It’s about a teenager called Beck Granger and he gets lost on a mountain. Lots of scary things happen to him. Giant rocks fall on him, he gets attacked by black bears and gets stuck in flash floods. He is also trying to stop the big companies from polluting the planet.

My favourite part – is when he gets attacked by mosquitoes and Beck pulls the leaves off a pine tree and rubs them on himself to stop them from biting him. I like Beck because I can imagine myself walking into the jungle and being just like him.

Ben’s Book Reviews

  1. Dinosaur Cove Swimming with the Sea monster by Rex Stone.

The book was about two boys that went on lots of adventures. They had a cave and a velociraptor dinosaur friend. They were trying to capture a sea monster but they got in trouble but were rescued by some friendly sea creatures. I found it a really fun book to read and I give it 5 stars as there was so much action and emotion in it. I don’t think it could be made any better and it was the best book I’ve read yet. I am going to read other Dinosaur Cove books.

  1. The Snake who Came to stay – J Donaldson

This book was about a snake that escaped from its cage. It lost its old skin and it got a new one. It also pretended to be a hose in the next door neighbours garden. The girl who was looking after it left the cage door open. I really enjoyed this book as I love snakes so I also give this 5 out of 5 star

Marcus reviews Kensuke’s Kingdom

I especially liked the book called ‘ Kensuke’s Kingdom” because it has so much emotions and clever text.

The most fascinating thing about this story is that the deep friendship between a young boy Michael and old Japanese Kensuke.

Their mother tongue, age and the culture were different but they made beautiful relationship.

Another thing I like is that Kensuke cares about the orang-tang because it shows, that relationship is not always have to be with common creatures.

I feel sorry and happy that Michael ended up in a random island had to make living against all those cons, like the mosquitoes that he mentions in text.

The ending was very impressive!

I absolutely enjoyed this book.

Easter Holiday: Reading & Book Reviews

Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone by J K Rowling Illustrated by Jim Kay

I finished reading this book in the holidays.  It was fantastic!  The main character is Harry Potter, and his friends Ron and Hermione.  His enemy is Malfoy and enemy teacher is Professor Snape.  The story is about The Philosophers Stone which is locked away safely behind deadly chambers.  In the Chambers are Fluffy (Hagrids 3 headed dog), killer plants, a giant chess set, flying keys, the mountain Troll and potions and the Mirror of Erst.

My favourite character is Harry because he in smart, clever, brave and he faced ‘He who must not be named’ twice.  I loved the bit when Hermione and Harry play with the giant chess set against Ron.  It was really exciting and I was wondering who was going to win and go to the next Chamber – and what were they going to find.  At the end of the story, Harry is in the hospital wing in a bed next to a table covered in Sweets because he had saved the school!

I really loved the illustrations in this book – my favourite one is of the back of Flitwicks head as it shows a freaky eye peering out of the back of his head.

I would encourage my friends to read this book because it is interesting, fun and the pictures are amazing.

The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams

I read this book to my little brother Sebastian.  This short story is about boy called Sam who adopts an Elephant from Africa.  He returns home but a week later, the Elephant appears on his door step when his mum is at work.  The Elephant ate all of the food in the house and a bit later in the day, his Elephant friends arrived at the house – all the way from AFRICA!  Sam was puzzled but the Elephant said that when he was adopted, Sam had not read the small print at the bottom of the form which said it would let the Elephant invite all of his friends to come over.

My favourite character is the Elephant because he is funny, rude and destroys Sams Bike!  I would recommend this short story to my friends because it is funny and the pictures are good.

Aliens Love Panta Claus – by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort

I read this book to Sebastian.  This book is really funny and the Aliens help Santa Claus deliver all of the presents because his Reindeer have run away.  The Aliens call Santa Claus – Panta Claus and in the pictures, all of the aliens wear brightly coloured Pants!  In the end, the Aliens delivered some of the presents and decorate the Christmas Tree with Pants as well.  Santa Claus also gets to ride in the Aliens space ship as his sleigh breaks down.

I would recommend this book to all readers because it is funny, and a quick read.

Usborne Discovery – Sharks by Jonathan Sheikh-Miller

I bought this book last year when I slept at the Plymouth Aquarium on a Shark Sleepover!  I love this book because it tells you all about different types of Sharks and the pictures are really helpful.  I like to flick through the pages until something interests me.  My favourite page is ‘Going to Kill’ because it has really good pictures and it tells you about how the Great White Shark attacks it Prey.  The opposite page shows you how the Sharks can hunt in groups.

I was lucky enough to Snorkel with Sharks in Dubai this Easter.  In the tank were Reef Sharks, Blacktips and also a few Guitar Sharks which brushed against my foot!!!

Did you know that Rays are related to Sharks…….

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in fish and sharks even if they find the writing a bit tricky as you can learn lots from the pictures too.

Nuts in Space by Elys Dolan

This book is written like a Comic so it’s really cool to read.  The pictures are good and I really like the guide at the back of the book which shows you around the space ship.

The story is about the Lost Nuts of Legend and the animals which have set out to find them.  Once they have found them, the animals have to visit different planets to try and work out how to get home again. My favourite part of the book is when they enter the Death Banana where they find Monkey Troopers and Darth Monkey.  It was really funny – “I’ll put the kettle on. Peppermint for Me”.  It also reminds me of Star Wars.

I would recommend this book because it’s funny and the ending made me laugh a lot – but I won’t spoil it….

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C S Lewis

I stared reading this book when I was in Dubai and got into it really quickly.  It is about four children and they discover a huge wardrobe when they are playing hide-and-seek.  The children climb into the wardrobe and out of the back into a magical world of snow and ice called Narnia.  They go on an adventure and meet Mr & Mrs Beaver, Mr Tuns and Aslan the great Lion.

My favourite character is Aslan because he is brave, friendly and a good warrior.  I also like the descriptions of Narnia and how pretty it is.  My favourite part of the story is the battle between the White Witch and Aslan.  Peter is injured in the battle, but he is given a special potion and he gets better.  In the end, Aslan wins the battle.

I would really recommend this book because although it is sad, the children have a great adventure and you feel like you are there with them.

Harry R has been very busy reading and writing reviews!

1) Book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever by Jeff Kinney

Review: I recommend the book because it has a mixture of happiness and excitement like the bit where all the electricity in Greg’s house is off apart from Manny’s room because he switched the electricity off in the other rooms except for his.

 2) Book: Diary of a Wimpy kid: Old school by Jeff Kinney

Review: I recommend this book because as with the previous book, it is a mixture of happiness and excitement like the part where Greg goes into a room thinking that it was Silas Scratch’s room only to find his dad in there! Silas Scratch is an old farmer who was sent out of his village by the president and ever since then he has been surviving on slugs and worms!

3)Audiobooks: Rat burger by David Walliams

I recommend this audiobook because it is full of funny moments for example the scene when the rat is on Zoey’s head and the teacher said Zoey there is a RAT on your HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the class finds out that the rat is actually Zoey’s pet. She gets suspended because of this incident.

4) Audiobook: Billionaire boy by David Walliams

This is a story about a family who becomes very rich because the dad invents bum-fresh loo rolls. The boy Joe Spud struggles to find a friend in his rich school so he asks his dad to put him in the local school where he makes a real friend. A lot of other kids want to be friends with him but only because he is rich. What is interesting about this story is that money is not important for making friends. I strongly recommend this book. It is entertaining.

5) Book: how I got lost in London by James Patterson

I give this book 4 out 5 stars. I recommend it because the main character, Rafe (an American boy) meets a bodyguard in Britain and after they had a chat, when Rafe went back to the hotel, he realised that the bodyguard was a ghost!

6) Book: Timmy Failure by Stephen Pastists

This book gets 7 out of 10 because the most exciting bit was when the failure mobile (Segway) got stolen by the evil one who happens to be the next-door neighbour! Then he finds out that the police saw It in the middle of the road [the neighbour put it there] and took it away.

7) Book: Charlie Bone and the time twister by Jenny Nimmo

I like it and give it 5/5 because when Charlie Bone travels through time with the time twister, he ends up 90 years off from where he intended to be and what’s really unlucky, there are only 5-10 people who like him at the school.

8) Book : Wonder-Woman by Jodi Picoult

I do not recommend this book because although the story is ok to start with, the ending is confusing.

 9) Book: Batman through the looking glass by Jodi Picoult

I do not recommend this book as the ending is even weirder than the previous book!

Rory The Story by Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore has been reviewed by Jonny

Book Review

Main Characters  Rory, Max, Hans

Storyline

Rory is a school boy who tells exciting and unbelievable stories to his friends, for example, him climbing Mount Everest or that an octopus came out of the toilet! His friends do not believe him. One day he came in to school with a racing hat on and said a racing driver gave it to him and he also said the racing driver was called Max and he was very ill so he had to take over the Grand Prix with his rival Hans who was cheating. Rory said that he had won the race and every one celebrated. At the end of the story his classmates still don’t believe him, but then he shows them a signed photo of Max the racing driver and they are not sure.

What I would change about the book I would not change anything about the book but think I would have liked to know if the racing story was really true or not.

What I liked about the book I liked the characters, I liked the stories that Rory told especially the main story. I liked how it ended as I like cliffhangers but I also wanted to know the truth!

Tom Gates Top of the Class is reviewed by James R

*Author: Liz Pichon

*Book Review:

This book is about a boy called Tom Gates who is trying to work his up to the top of the class but he has to overcome a lot of challenges such as:

  1. Staying awake in lessons
  2. Not letting his parents (his mum and dad) write in his school planner
  3. Stopping himself from drawing hilarious pictures of teachers

And doodling on his work!!!!!

I don’t think this book could be improved by the author because there are lots of pictures next to or near the writing which makes it fun to read. I would highly recommend this book.

*Words to describe the book: Funny, serious, cool and a good read!!
