End of this half term

We have had been very busy again this week. On Tuesday the Science Museum visited the School and today we visited the Verulamium in St. Albans. The boys enjoyed their workshop and impressed us all with their knowledge of Roman life.

We have continued to read the Butterfly Lion and we are certainly now more than half way through. The boys have explored adjectives and understand their function and how to use them.

In Maths we have consolidated all concepts covered this half term.

We wish you a very restful half term!

What a debate!

We began our week with an interesting and thought provoking debate. We decided to discuss whether children should or should not wear uniform. As you can see below the boys had many valid arguments both for and against uniform.

FOR AGAINST
Look smart

Appreciate your School.

Makes you feel part of a team.

Could get bullied for your choice of clothing – open to mockery

Everyone looks the same

You would get lost on a School trip without School Uniform

Might wear inappropriate clothing.

People know what school you belong to.

Security of knowing what you should wear.

Puts you in the mood for learning.

Improves behaviour.

It is more comfortable.

It gets lost and found easily.

Mrs Owens has spare uniform.

Boys might show off what they are wearing.

Cost – other clothes cheaper

Self – expression – personality

No waiting for short-sleeved order –

if it is a hot day can wear shorts – you can wear more layers if it is cold

Boys would recognise their own clothes.

Need rules on hair styles and on how far you can express yourself.

Bertie – would not have been recognised (reference to our current text The Butterfly Lion).

You have more clothes.

Parents would not have to worry about washing

Not tucking shirts in – saves teacher reminding

School shirts and ties uncomfortable.

Easier to change or not change at all.

Being given a spare P.E. kit is embarrassing – not having one is better.

At the end of the lesson we took a vote. Interestingly there was not an outright winner, as some boys had changed their minds, so it was draw!

The debate was conducted to get the boys used to speaking in large groups in readiness for their ESB examination which will take place next year.

In Maths this week we have focused on subtraction using the column method. We have looked at borrowing or exchanging when subtracting if we need to.

In History the boys have labelled and designed Roman Villas and we are looking forward to our trip on Thursday to the Verulamium.

We have continued to read the next chapter from The Butterfly Lion; we have explored the themes and answered questions relating to the text.

All the boys performed their Harvest Hope production to the rest of the School and we look forward to welcoming you all this afternoon for our final performance.

In Science this week we have looked at how climate can affect what we can grow in this country and how we import a lot of fruit and vegetables we eat on a daily basis.

Next week in Maths we will solve word problems using the column method of addition and subtraction.

Have a superb weekend!

First week in October

We began our week with a Pathways Assembly about Jonah and the Whale. The Pathways Team relied heavily on audience participation, the boys created the sound effects and helped to tell the story.

We have continued to focus on the column method for addition this week and the boys have shown that the are confident using this method. Next week we move onto the column method for subtraction.

The boys have read the next chapter from The Butterfly Lion and they have completed comprehension questions to show their understanding.

In R.E. this week we have learnt about Hinduism, the faith and the traditions.

Our Harvest Production is almost ready and we look forward to sharing this with you next Friday.

Have a great weekend!
